AI tools that turn a word into a simple illustration

If you want a simple illustration from a word, the main choices are Inkword, Adobe Illustrator's Text to Vector Graphic, Recraft and ChatGPT's image generation. Choose by what you need back: an editable vector, a matching set in one style, or a single picture, and by whether you may use it commercially on the free plan.

Inkword

Type a word or short phrase; it draws a minimal ink illustration that appears stroke by stroke, in one of five styles (Big Heads, Figures, Cut Paper, Riso, Blueprint).

Terms: Free account: 10 drawings a month with PNG export. Paid: SVG, GIF, MP4 and Lottie. Inkword for Mac draws matching sets of up to 25 using your own Claude or ChatGPT plan.

Best for: Headers, slides and empty states that should all look like one set, and drawings that animate.

Adobe Illustrator: Text to Vector Graphic

Generates scenes, subjects and icons inside Illustrator, on their own layer, and can follow your own artwork as a style reference.

Terms: Part of Illustrator; output is fully editable, scalable vector.

Best for: Designers already in Illustrator who want to edit every path.

Recraft

An AI design tool that makes images, including vector graphics, from a prompt.

Terms: Free-plan images are owned by Recraft, public in its gallery and not licensed for commercial use; paid plans (Basic, Pro, Teams) change that.

Best for: Many kinds of graphics in one tool, once you're on a paid plan.

ChatGPT image generation

Makes a picture from a description inside a chat, and changes it when you ask.

Terms: Pixel images (no vector file).

Best for: A one-off picture when you already use ChatGPT and don't need a vector or a matching set.

Which to pick

An editable vector: Illustrator's Text to Vector Graphic, Recraft (paid), or Inkword's SVG.
A set that matches, frame after frame: Inkword (one style per set, and the Mac app plans the whole set).
A drawing that animates itself: Inkword's GIF, MP4 and Lottie.
One quick picture: ChatGPT.
